Statement Following the Ghost Ship Fire in OaklandIn the aftermath of the Ghost Ship fire in Oakland, we have all been feeling the pain and worry emanating from our friends and colleagues in the Bay Area and beyond. Our Council members and staff issued the following statement: "Our thoughts go out to all who have been affected by the horrible tragedy at the Ghost Ship artist space. We are deeply concerned by the reality that so many artists across California are not able to live and work in spaces that are safe - either in structure or in spirit. This unimaginable incident is a painful reminder of a critical challenge facing artists in many of California's communities. On behalf of the California Arts Council we express our deepest condolences for the artists and individuals lost, and we share our hopes for healing and strength in Oakland's remarkable creative community and beyond." Our Council will adjourn its December 15, 2016 business meeting in honor of the victims of the Ghost Ship fire.

Grants Workshop: 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend and to address the Council during the public comment period. Arts Council Programs Officer Shelly Gilbride will provide an overview of the California Arts Council's state grant process and train local arts and culture nonprofit organizations in best practices for composing successful grant applications. The workshop will be held at the Mind and Mill located at 3615 Main Street, Suite 103, Riverside, CA 92501.

Six Programs Accepting Applications NowWe are accepting applications for the following grant programs: ARTISTS ACTIVATING COMMUNITIES: Up to $18,000 for artist residencies in community settings. ARTISTS IN SCHOOLS: Up to $18,000 supporting students' overall well-being and academic achievement through arts engagement. New categories offered this year supporting PreK, field trips, afterschool and summer programs!
CREATIVE CALIFORNIA COMMUNITIES: Up to $50,000 a year for small and mid-sized organizations and up to $75,000 a year for large organizations to support collaborative creative placemaking projects. Now a two-year grant program! LOCAL IMPACT: Up to $18,000 for arts projects in underserved communities. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND CONSULTING: $1,000-$5,000 for capacity-building professional development or consulting projects for arts organizations. DEADLINE: Dec. 14th STATEWIDE AND REGIONAL NETWORKS: Up to $30,000 to support culturally-specific, multicultural, and discipline-based statewide and regional arts networks and service organizations.
