Composer (and "Arts Driver") Marvin Hamlisch Dies

Marvin Hamlisch, award-winning composer and musician famous for his movie and theater scores, has died. Hamlisch's role as an "Arts Driver" in the California Arts Council's "Create a State" campaign to raise $40 million through sales of California Arts License Plates was just revealed at the sold-out Pasadena Pops concert in late July.

Chief Deputy Director to Retire

Marilyn Nielsen, Chief Deputy Director of the California Arts Council, has announced her retirement. She was appointed by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2005. Her principal duties include legislative liaison, state policy compliance, special initiatives, and management of the agency's Tax Checkoff efforts. She also served as Interim Director for seven months in 2011 immediately after the retirement of former Director Muriel Johnson. Nielsen's last day will be September 28.

California Indian Basket Exhibit Travels to Pleasanton

The exciting and unique exhibit, American Masterpieces: Artistic Legacy of California Indian Basketry, is on the move again. A portion of the original exhibit is soon to be shown at Museum on Main in Pleasanton. Mark your calendars for the Sept. 11 - Oct. 14 dates. An exhibit catalog comes out in November. Lots more.
